Armando Castillo Valerio, 50, of Denison, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for over two decades after being convicted of flooding Northern Iowa with ice methamphetamine. Valerio was sentenced to 262 months by U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand in Cedar Rapids, marking the end of a years-long investigation into a regional drug conspiracy.
On June 22, 2016, a federal jury found Valerio guilty of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine, following overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutors. Trial testimony revealed Valerio orchestrated a steady flow of high-purity, crystalized meth—commonly known as ice—from out-of-state suppliers into communities across Iowa. He cultivated a network of distributors who funneled the drug through multiple counties.
Witnesses testified they obtained the drug directly from Valerio, who operated with the precision of a cartel middleman. The operation spanned jurisdictions, prompting a rare coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the DEA, Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo police departments, and multiple county narcotics units from central and eastern Iowa.
The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa C. Williams, was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) initiative—a federal push targeting high-level drug traffickers. Valerio’s case exemplifies the reach of such task forces, which pooled intelligence and manpower to dismantle supply chains rooted in rural and suburban hubs.
In addition to 262 months behind bars, Valerio was hit with a $100 special assessment and will face five years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning he will serve at least 85% of his term before reentry into society.
Currently in U.S. Marshals custody, Valerio awaits transfer to a federal penitentiary. The case, filed under 15-CR-2050, remains accessible through the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic court records. Follow updates via @USAO_NDIA.
