Deadwood, SD – The gritty Deadwood town has been hit with another drug-related shock. Michael Mamola, a 36-year-old local, has been charged in federal district court with Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Distribution of a Controlled Substance.
Mamola was nabbed on January 24, 2017, and faced U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on February 27, 2017, where he pleaded not guilty to the serious charges against him.
The potential penalty for Mamola is severe – a minimum of 5 years and up to 40 years of imprisonment, plus a staggering $5,000,000 fine. Not only that, but he could be on supervised release for life and must pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be imposed.
The allegations against Mamola involve conspiring with another person to distribute methamphetamine in the Deadwood area. It is crucial to note that these charges are merely accusations, and Mamola is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Investigating this case is the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson handling the prosecution.
Mamola remains detained pending trial. No trial date has been scheduled yet as the gritty federal crime saga unfolds.
