Romero Gets 5 Years for Erie Cocaine Operation
ERIE, Pa. – Jose A. Romero, 35, of Columbia, South Carolina, is headed to federal prison for five years after being sentenced today for his role in a large-scale cocaine trafficking scheme operating in Erie. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge David S. Cercone, closes a case that stretches back to 2014 and highlights the continued flow of narcotics into northwestern Pennsylvania.
According to court documents, Romero conspired with at least two other individuals to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. The operation wasn’t some street-level hustle; investigators uncovered evidence pointing to a significant network moving kilogram quantities of the drug. The bust began to unfold in March 2014 when police seized packaging materials linked to a full kilogram of cocaine within the city of Erie.
The investigation didn’t stop there. Just days later, on March 20, 2014, law enforcement officers intercepted a sale made by one of Romero’s co-conspirators, recovering two ounces of cocaine. This confirmed the ongoing operation and provided crucial evidence tying Romero to the distribution network. While the initial seizure hinted at larger volumes, the follow-up bust solidified the case against the group.
Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song announced the sentence, emphasizing the collaborative effort that brought Romero to justice. Assistant United States Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini spearheaded the prosecution, meticulously building the case against Romero and his associates. The investigation was a joint operation conducted by the EAGLE task force – a multi-agency unit comprised of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Bureau of Narcotics Investigation, and the Erie Police Department.
The EAGLE task force has been a persistent presence in Erie, targeting drug trafficking and other serious crimes. This case serves as a reminder of the resources dedicated to dismantling these networks and bringing those responsible to account. While Romero’s sentence provides a measure of closure, the fight against drug trafficking in Erie, and across the nation, remains a constant battle.
Details regarding the co-defendants and any additional sentencing related to this case were not immediately available. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become public. The case serves as a stark illustration of the dangers posed by interstate drug trafficking and the dedication of law enforcement to disrupt these criminal enterprises.
