ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A life extinguished, a family shattered. Thomas J. Yazzie, Jr., 52, of Farmington, New Mexico, admitted today to the reckless act that claimed another life. Yazzie pleaded guilty in federal court to an involuntary manslaughter charge stemming from a deadly drunk driving incident.
The case dates back to May 10, 2016, when Yazzie, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County. He was indicted on February 7, 2017, but only today took responsibility for his actions. Details released by the Department of Justice paint a grim picture of a driver impaired by alcohol, losing control and causing a fatal crash.
During the court proceedings, Yazzie didn’t offer excuses, only a blunt admission of guilt. He confessed to killing the victim while operating a vehicle under the influence. He explicitly acknowledged that the alcohol had compromised his judgment and physical coordination, rendering him a danger behind the wheel. The identity of the victim has not been released.
Federal prosecutors are seeking a maximum sentence of eight years in federal prison for Yazzie. While this offers a small measure of justice, it won’t bring back the life lost. The sentencing hearing date remains unconfirmed, leaving the victim’s family in continued uncertainty.
The investigation into this tragedy was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Gallup office of the FBI, the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety, and the New Mexico State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Murphy is leading the prosecution, determined to see Yazzie held accountable for his deadly choices.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving, particularly within Native American communities where rates of alcohol-related fatalities remain disproportionately high. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when it is scheduled, ensuring the public is aware of the price of reckless behavior.
