Kernia Avalo De Mejia, Misusing a Social Security Number, Massachusetts 2024
A Lawrence woman has been charged with misusing a social security number, a crime that could land her in jail for up to 5 years. Kernia Avalo De Mejia, 28, allegedly used the stolen identity to rent apartments in the greater Lawrence area.
According to court documents, De Mejia’s actions were part of a larger investigation into drug trafficking by illegal aliens in the Lawrence-Methuen area. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Bruce M. Foucart, Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, made the announcement. The case is being prosecuted by Thomas E. Kanwit of Ortiz’s Major Crimes Unit.
The indictment alleges that De Mejia misused the social security number, but she is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The details contained in the indictment are allegations.
The investigation into De Mejia’s alleged crimes is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether she will be convicted and face the maximum sentence. One thing is certain, however: misusing a social security number is a serious crime that can have severe consequences.
As the Grimy Times continues to investigate this story, we will provide updates as more information becomes available. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the victims of De Mejia’s alleged crimes and their families.
