Bola Peters, Tax Refund Fraud, New York 2024

Erie, Pa. – In a shocking turn of events, Bola Peters, 44, a former resident of Springfield Garden, New York, has been handed down a 60-month sentence in federal prison for her role in a massive refund fraud scheme, according to Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song.

Peters was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and ordered to pay $517,168.67 in restitution. United States District Judge David S. Cercone imposed the severe sentence on the schemer.

The jury heard testimony that Peters controlled multiple bank accounts where fraudulent federal tax refunds were deposited. She would then siphon off funds for her own gain and return the remainder to co-conspirators. Evidence presented at trial also revealed that Peters had numerous false identification documents that matched stolen identities from the fraudulent tax returns.

Investigators found a treasure trove of stolen identity documents in Peters’ possession, including handwritten ledgers with hundreds of names used to file false federal tax returns. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold on behalf of the government.

Acting U.S. Attorney Song commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation for their diligent work that led to the successful prosecution of Peters. The justice system has once again shown its strength in combating financial crimes.

This sentence should serve as a stern warning to those who think they can profit from illegal activities like refund fraud. Bola Peters’ downfall is a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice by federal law enforcement agencies.
