Anchorage Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Child Pornography

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – A 48-year-old Anchorage man has been sentenced to a decade in prison for his shocking crime of possessing child pornography and failing to register as a sex offender.

Andrew Weed appeared before U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason, who handed down the sentence after considering the gravity of the case. The conviction stems from Weed’s possession of over 106,000 images of child pornography on his computer, a collection so vast that it underscores the depth of his depravity.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Audrey J. Renschen, Weed had been previously convicted in 2004 for 18 federal child sexual exploitation crimes. His latest offense occurred in 2016 when he downloaded and saved child pornography while at work. This was discovered during a federal search warrant executed on May 31, 2016, where over 106,000 images were recovered.

After his arrest, Weed fled the scene and evaded law enforcement for more than two months before being apprehended by U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in Valdez, Alaska. He was arrested on August 2, 2016, for failing to update his sex offender registration as required by federal and state laws.

Judge Gleason emphasized the severity of Weed’s crime during the sentencing hearing, noting that his actions were a grave threat to children. The case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, aimed at curbing child pornography trafficking and protecting children from online predators.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder commended the FBI, Anchorage Police Department (APD), and USMS for their diligent work in bringing Weed to justice.
