Kareem Jamal Jones, Fentanyl-Laced Heroin Distribution, PA

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Another dealer pushing poison onto the streets. Kareem Jamal Jones, 28, formerly of Philadelphia, admitted in federal court today to a conspiracy that put lives at risk. The charge? Conspiring to distribute heroin cut with fentanyl – a combination that’s been fueling the overdose crisis across the nation.

Jones pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson. The feds say the scheme ran from August 25, 2016, to September 14, 2016. He wasn’t moving massive quantities – less than 100 grams of the heroin-fentanyl mix – but even a small amount of that stuff can be lethal. He acted in concert with a co-defendant, whose name hasn’t been released, to peddle the dangerous drugs.

United States Attorney Scott W. Brady didn’t mince words, announcing the guilty plea as another step in the ongoing fight against the opioid epidemic. The investigation revealed Jones and his partner intended to profit from the misery of others, knowingly distributing a substance that carries a high risk of overdose and death. This wasn’t just about getting high; it was about profit over people.

Judge Gibson has set sentencing for June 12, 2018, at 10 a.m. Jones is facing a potential maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars, along with a $1,000,000 fine. However, the final sentence will depend on the severity of the offense and any prior criminal record Jones may have. Federal Sentencing Guidelines will be a key factor in the judge’s decision.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is leading the prosecution. The bust was a joint effort between the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cambria County Drug Task Force. These agencies worked tirelessly to unravel the conspiracy and bring Jones to justice.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of fentanyl-laced heroin. While Jones has admitted his guilt, the damage he helped inflict on the community remains. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing, as well as other efforts to combat the drug crisis plaguing our nation.
