Anthony Darnell McCutchen, Illegal Firearms Purchase, Virginia 2016

Alexandria, Virginia – In a shocking turn of events, Anthony Darnell McCutchen, a 27-year-old man from Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for his role in the illegal purchase of two firearms.

According to court documents, on October 1, 2016, McCutchen met an individual at a Virginia gun show, where he recruited them to purchase the firearms on his behalf. The individual, who was accompanied by McCutchen, made false statements to a firearms dealer to aid in the purchase of the guns.

Law enforcement observed McCutchen’s activity at the gun show and, after learning of his prior conviction for armed robbery in Washington, D.C., executed a traffic stop shortly after McCutchen left the gun show. During the stop, law enforcement recovered the two firearms from McCutchen’s possession.

McCutchen pleaded guilty to his role in the illegal firearms purchase on December 9, 2016. The sentence was handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis, III.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar. The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Washington Field Division, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The illegal purchase of firearms is a serious offense, and McCutchen’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and the ATF commend the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation and prosecution of this case.
