Tyler Hall, Drug User in Possession of a Firearm, WV 2024

A Jefferson County man has admitted to illegally possessing a firearm while using drugs, a federal offense that could land him behind bars for up to a decade. Tyler Hall, 26, of Ranson, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of “Drug User in Possession of a Firearm – Aiding and Abetting,” according to U.S. Attorney Bill Powell.

Hall admitted to having a Taurus 38 Special handgun during September 2015, a time when he was actively using controlled substances. Federal law strictly prohibits individuals who are unlawful users of drugs from possessing firearms, a rule Hall violated when he was caught with the loaded weapon in Jefferson County.

The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul T. Camilletti, was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Authorities moved swiftly to build a case after initial discovery of the firearm, underscoring federal efforts to crack down on illegal gun possession in high-risk categories.

Hall now faces a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. While the statutory maximum is severe, the actual sentence will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which weigh the seriousness of the offense and the defendant’s criminal history.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the plea hearing, where Hall formally entered his guilty plea. No prior convictions were cited in the initial court documents, but prosecutors emphasized that illegal gun possession endangers public safety regardless of past record.

The conviction sends a clear message: even non-violent firearm offenses carry steep consequences under federal law. For Hall, the decision to possess a gun while using drugs has resulted in a federal criminal record and the looming threat of years in prison.
