Juan Carlos Bautista, Enticement of a Child, TX 2023

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Juan Carlos Bautista, 52, of McAllen, Texas, is headed to federal prison after pleading guilty to the heinous crime of enticement of a child. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick announced the sentencing today, a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital shadows.

The case began to unfold on January 19, 2017, when law enforcement officials strategically placed an advertisement in the “casual encounters” section of the Brownsville Craigslist website. The ad was bait, and Bautista took the hook. He responded via email, explicitly expressing interest in a sexual relationship with a purported 13-year-old female. This wasn’t a misunderstanding; it was a calculated, predatory act.

Bautista swiftly made arrangements to meet the individual he believed to be a minor in Harlingen, intending a sexual encounter. He walked straight into a trap. On February 8, 2017, instead of a rendezvous, he was met by law enforcement and immediately taken into custody. The setup, though controversial, delivered a predator directly into the hands of justice.

After initially entering a plea of not guilty and beginning trial on January 30, 2019 – with four government witnesses already having testified – Bautista abruptly changed course and admitted his guilt. Today, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. delivered the sentence: 120 months – a decade – of federal imprisonment. But the consequences don’t end there.

Following his prison term, Bautista will be subject to 10 years of supervised release, with stringent requirements designed to severely limit his contact with children and access to the internet. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, a permanent mark of shame and a public warning. Bautista remains in custody pending transfer to a yet-to-be-determined U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the Rio Grande Valley Child Exploitation and Investigation Task Force. This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
