Connecticut Man Admits to $54K Retail Heist

CONCORD, NH – James Falk, 38, of Preston, Connecticut, is facing the consequences after admitting to his role in a sophisticated retail theft ring that bled New England stores out of approximately $54,000. Falk pleaded guilty in federal court today to conspiracy to transport stolen goods, bringing an end – for now – to a brazen operation that exploited vulnerabilities in store security.

According to court documents, Falk and his accomplice weren’t grabbing impulse buys. Between April and December of 2018, the pair systematically targeted large retail stores across New England, focusing on high-value items like thermostats, alarm systems, electronics, hardware, and tools. They didn’t just pocket the goods; they engineered a system to bypass security and funnel the stolen merchandise into the online marketplace.

The scheme was chillingly methodical. Falk and his partner concealed stolen items within larger boxes and containers, blending in with legitimate purchases. Even more disturbingly, they employed containers designed to disrupt radio frequency (RF) security sensors, effectively blinding the stores’ anti-theft systems. The stolen goods were then shipped to an address in Maplewood, New Jersey, where they were prepped for resale to unsuspecting online consumers. Payments for the ill-gotten gains flowed back to Falk and his co-conspirator.

The jig was up on September 13, 2018, when the New Hampshire State Police caught Falk red-handed in Keene, New Hampshire, with over $5,000 worth of stolen merchandise in his possession. That arrest triggered a deeper investigation, revealing the full scope of the operation and the $54,000 in losses suffered by the victim stores. It’s a clear demonstration that even seemingly ‘low-level’ retail theft can be part of a larger, organized criminal enterprise.

“Interstate theft and fraud are serious crimes,” stated U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray. “We will remain vigilant in our efforts to protect businesses and consumers in the Granite State from such wrongdoing. I want to thank the law enforcement officers whose work put an end to this criminal scheme.” Falk is now scheduled to be sentenced on September 13, 2019, leaving the question of just how much time he’ll spend behind bars hanging in the balance.

The investigation was a joint effort by the New Hampshire State Police and the United States Department of Commerce. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Davis is prosecuting the case, signaling a continued federal focus on cracking down on organized retail crime. This case serves as a warning: stealing may seem easy, but the long arm of the law – and federal prosecutors – are always watching.
