A 23-year-old Hazleton man, Franklin Gonzalez, has been sentenced to 37 months’ imprisonment for his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy that distributed heroin in the Schuylkill County area.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin, which is equivalent to more than 4,000 retail bags of heroin.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley handed down the sentence, which also includes four years on supervised release following his prison sentence. Gonzalez, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, is also subject to being deported to the Dominican Republic.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police, and local police in Schuylkill County. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
The case is also part of a district-wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic of heroin use and distribution. The Heroin Initiative, led by the United States Attorney’s Office, targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who commit heroin-related offenses.
The sentence is a significant step in the fight against heroin trafficking in Pennsylvania. United States Attorney David J. Freed noted that the defendant’s guilty plea and subsequent sentence demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating the heroin epidemic and bringing those responsible to justice.
The Heroin Initiative and Project Safe Neighborhoods are just two examples of the efforts being made to reduce violent crime and make communities safer. By working together, law enforcement agencies can share resources and expertise to target and prosecute criminals, like Gonzalez, who are contributing to the heroin epidemic.
As the Department of Justice continues to focus on targeting violent criminals, cases like this one demonstrate the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The sentence handed down to Gonzalez serves as a warning to others involved in heroin trafficking that they will be held accountable for their actions.
