GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a major development in South Dakota’s law enforcement front, Travis Longfox, 28, from Whitewood, has been hit with serious federal charges for unlawful possession of a firearm. The charge stems from Longfox’s alleged July 2019 ownership of a Kel-Tec .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol, despite his previous felony conviction and subsequent firearms ban.
Longfox was officially charged on February 19, 2020, and he entered a not guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann on September 2, 2020. Should he be convicted, Longfox faces a stiff penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison, along with a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution could also be imposed.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime by uniting law enforcement at all levels with communities they serve. Reinvigorated in 2017, PSN has been instrumental in targeting violent criminals across the nation. Additionally, this case is linked to Project Guardian, a Department of Justice effort to combat gun violence and enforce firearms laws, ensuring that federal resources are directed at those who pose the greatest threat to our communities.
The investigation into Longfox’s alleged crime was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in collaboration with the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson is handling the prosecution. As it stands, Longfox remains detained pending trial, with no trial date set as of this report.
Longfox’s case underscores the ongoing efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for individuals who disregard firearms laws and put public safety at risk.
