Three Tons of Cocaine: Sinaloa Cartel Crew Busted

MANHATTAN, NY – A massive cocaine shipment and the men allegedly responsible are now in U.S. custody, thanks to a joint operation between American and Mexican law enforcement. RAYMUNDO MONTOYA-LÓPEZ, 45, ABRAHAM ALFONSO GARCÍA-MONTOYA, 31, and FELIZARDO DÍAZ-HERNANDEZ, 39, all hailing from Sinaloa, Mexico, face federal charges in Manhattan for their roles in a brazen attempt to flood the streets with nearly three tons of the deadly drug.

MONTOYA-LÓPEZ, GARCÍA-MONTOYA, and DÍAZ-HERNANDEZ were arrested at the scene.

“As alleged, these defendants are responsible for the attempted importation of more than three tons of cocaine into the United States,” declared Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss. “Thanks to the work of the DEA and the Mexican Navy, the shipment was interdicted and the defendants are in custody and facing federal prosecution.” The DEA’s New York Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Strike Force spearheaded the investigation.

Corlett emphasized the combined forces of federal, state, and local law enforcement, along with Mexican authorities, which “put this operation out of business.” NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea added that the case “is another illustration of our joint, ongoing responsibilities in eradicating international drug trafficking.”

The three defendants are now charged with conspiring to import cocaine into the United States. If convicted, they face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence. The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors are signaling they intend to pursue maximum penalties for these alleged kingpins.
