Brighton Veit, a 22-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, is facing federal charges after being indicted for failure to register as a sex offender—a crime carrying up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The indictment, returned on November 9, 2021, stems from allegations that Veit ignored federal registration mandates during a critical 13-day window in September 2021.
Veit appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 16, 2021, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. Despite the plea, the charges expose a pattern of noncompliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act—a law designed to track offenders and protect communities. Authorities allege Veit failed to update his registration between September 14 and September 27, 2021, despite being legally obligated to do so.
The requirement isn’t arbitrary. Veit was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in November 2020, a felony that immediately classified him as a registrant under federal law. That conviction triggered lifelong responsibilities, including regular check-ins with authorities and immediate reporting of any address or status changes. His alleged evasion of those duties now forms the core of the federal case against him.
If convicted, Veit could serve up to a decade behind bars, pay a quarter-million-dollar fine, and face lifetime supervision upon release. The court may also impose $100 in mandatory penalties to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, with restitution possible depending on the circumstances uncovered during prosecution.
The investigation was spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service, the federal agency tasked with tracking fugitives and monitoring high-risk sex offenders. With jurisdictional reach and enforcement muscle, the Marshals play a critical role in holding registrants accountable—especially in rural or underserved regions like the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, where Eagle Butte is located.
Currently, Veit remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting trial. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem is prosecuting the case. No trial date has been set. The indictment remains an accusation; Veit is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
