Michael Peyton Gunn Convicted in Child Sex Trafficking Horror

Michael Peyton Gunn, 36, of Evans, Ga., was convicted Thursday by a federal jury on nine felony counts tied to a years-long campaign of child sex trafficking and exploitation so grotesque it left prosecutors and law enforcement demanding justice. The verdict, delivered just after 5 p.m. following a four-day trial in Augusta, Ga., found Gunn guilty of every charge, including Sex Trafficking of a Child and four counts of Production of Child Pornography. He faces a minimum of 15 years in federal prison, with three counts carrying a potential life sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.

Gunn was found guilty of Conspiracy to Engage in Sex Trafficking of a Minor, Coercion and Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity, Possession of Child Pornography, and Obstruction of a Sex-Trafficking Investigation. The trial, held before U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall, exposed a pattern of calculated control and abuse. The minor victim, now a teenager, testified that Gunn used rewards, threats, and intimidation to manipulate them into sexual acts beginning at age 7, escalating to commercial sex trafficking by age 13. The abuse was not just private — it was photographed, sold, and exploited for profit.

Acting U.S. Attorney David H. Estes called the crimes “absolutely horrific,” stating that the initial discovery of child pornography was only the tip of a monstrous operation. The FBI was first drawn into the case in February 2020 during a child pornography investigation in Hopkins County, Texas. Agents discovered over 700 explicit images tied to a single minor, with geolocation data pointing directly to Gunn’s home in Evans. A subsequent search of his residence confirmed the digital trail, leading to his March 2020 indictment. But the investigation only deepened from there.

By March 2021, a superseding indictment added more charges and named Gunn’s then-wife, Amanda Gunn, a/k/a “Amanda Howard,” 34, of Augusta, on counts of Sex Trafficking Conspiracy and Obstruction of a Child Sex Trafficking Investigation. She has since pled guilty and awaits sentencing. Evidence showed the couple conspired to exploit the child for years, profiting from both the sale of explicit images and by arranging sexual encounters with others. Michael Gunn coordinated the abuse, using fear and manipulation to silence the victim and expand the network of predators.

Jonathan Eugene Grantham, 45, of Graniteville, S.C., also testified in court after pleading guilty in August to Coercion and Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Sexual Activity. A former high school teacher, Grantham admitted to responding to an online ad trafficking the minor, traveling from South Carolina to Evans, and transporting the child to a motel for sex in exchange for payment. His cooperation laid bare the commercial aspect of the operation, revealing how easily predators accessed the victim through online channels.

The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue to track others involved in the exploitation network. Gunn will be sentenced after a background investigation by the U.S. Probation Office. Acting Special Agent in Charge Chris Macrae of FBI Atlanta said no sentence could erase the trauma inflicted, but emphasized that removing Gunn from the streets ensures he can no longer harm innocent children. The victim’s testimony, raw and unflinching, was the cornerstone of the prosecution’s case — a voice finally breaking years of silence and abuse.
