Methamphetamine Trafficking Grips Wisconsin: Julio Alvarez Sanchez Sentenced to 5 Years
A disturbing trend in Wisconsin has been brought to light as Julio Alvarez Sanchez, a 39-year-old Mexican citizen, was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for distributing 500 grams or more of methamphetamine in Madison. Alvarez Sanchez’s prison term will be followed by 3 years of supervised release, a harsh penalty for the severity of his crime.
According to officials, Alvarez Sanchez brought methamphetamine from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Madison, where he provided it to Juana Armenta Mora. On April 4, 2022, Armenta Mora sold 973 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant in Madison.
An additional methamphetamine deal took place on April 14, 2022, when Alvarez Sanchez met with the confidential informant in a parking lot in Madison. The defendant provided the informant with a toolbox containing 6.77 kilograms of methamphetamine, leading to his arrest.
Alvarez Sanchez subsequently admitted to participating in the April 2022 deliveries, as well as additional deliveries of methamphetamine. This admission highlighted the severity of his crime and contributed to the harsh sentence.
At sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson noted that this was a serious crime due to the large quantity of methamphetamine involved and Alvarez Sanchez’s admission of dealing methamphetamine on multiple occasions.
Alvarez Sanchez’s sentence serves as a warning to those involved in the trafficking of methamphetamine in Wisconsin. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, Jefferson County Drug Task Force, and Madison Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven P. Anderson and Kathryn E. Ginsberg prosecuted this case.
Alvarez Sanchez’s co-defendant, Juana Armenta Mora, pleaded guilty to distributing methamphetamine on September 8, 2022 and was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison on December 22, 2022.
