A Giles County man has been arrested for attempting to possess with intent to distribute dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and distributing lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), powerful psychedelic drugs.
Charles Herman Aardema III, 28, of Ripplemead, Virginia, was taken into custody by police investigators pursuant to a federal criminal complaint.
According to the complaint, in September 2021, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Miami international mail facility examined a parcel due to suspicious anomalies revealed by X-ray.
The parcel was addressed to Aardema’s Ripplemead home and shipped by a ‘Raul Wictor Silva Batista’ of Brazil.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed the exact contents of the parcel or the suspected source of the DMT and LSD.
The arrest comes as federal authorities continue to crack down on the illicit psychedelic drug trade.
Aardema is currently facing charges of attempting to possess with intent to distribute DMT and distributing LSD.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice, USAO for the Western District of Virginia.
