MADISON, WIS. – Benjamin T. Mann, 40, of Wisconsin Rapids, was handed a six-year prison sentence followed by 15 years of supervised release for distributing child pornography and engaging in online conversations about sexually assaulting children.
The court’s decision came after Mann pleaded guilty on September 9, 2021, to charges related to the distribution of explicit material involving minors. The investigation into Mann’s activities began in July 2020 when law enforcement executed a search warrant at an Ohio residence.
During their review of devices found during the search, authorities discovered that Mann had sent child pornography to an Ohio resident and communicated with him about committing acts of sexual violence against children. Additionally, Mann was charged with posting images of child pornography and discussing assault on Kik chat rooms with the resident and other individuals.
Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson noted that discussions regarding the sexual exploitation of minors were an aggravating factor in the case. The judge’s sentence is intended to protect the community for approximately 20 years, reflecting the severity of Mann’s crimes.
The investigation into Mann was led by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman handled the prosecution of this case.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who prey on children through digital means. The community can take solace in the justice served and the safety measures put in place to prevent such heinous acts from occurring again.
