New York man Christopher Patrick Moynihan, 32, of Salt Point, was handed a 21-month prison sentence yesterday for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach. Found guilty of obstructing an official proceeding, Moynihan’s actions during the riot caused significant disruption to a joint session of Congress.
The court also ordered Moynihan to serve 36 months of supervised release following his prison term and pay $2,000 in restitution. The evidence presented at trial showed Moynihan was among those who broke through Capitol security, entering the building at approximately 2:45 p.m. He briefly entered the Senate Gallery before reaching the Senate Chamber, where he rifled through a Senator’s desk and took photographs.
Moynihan’s sentence is part of a larger investigation that has seen more than 950 individuals arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division prosecuted the case, with significant assistance from the FBI’s New York and Washington Field Offices.
During his trial, Moynihan was caught on video pages through a notebook on top of a Senator’s desk and stating, ‘There’s gotta be something in here we can f— use against these —-bags.’ His actions sparked concern about the security implications of the breach and the potential for misuse of sensitive documents.
This sentencing comes as the investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol breach continues to unfold, with over 284 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement officials. The FBI encourages anyone with tips to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or visit tips.fbi.gov.
