FRESNO, Calif. — In a major breakthrough in the fight against gun violence, federal authorities have indicted Lance Jakell Henderson, 26, of Bakersfield, for being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Henderson came under fire after police were dispatched to the Marriott Courtyard hotel in Bakersfield on October 2, 2022, to quash a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, authorities identified Henderson as the culprit and discovered a ghost gun, loaded with eight rounds of 9mm ammunition, concealed in a diaper bag.
According to court documents, Henderson admitted to removing the gun from his hotel room and placing it in the bag. The Bakersfield Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked tirelessly to bring this case to closure.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurel J. Montoya is leading the prosecution against Henderson. If convicted, the defendant could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
The charges are merely allegations at this stage, with the court holding the final decision on any penalties after considering all relevant factors, including the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the U.S. Department of Justice’s initiative to reduce violent crime and gun violence across the nation. PSN was reinforced in May 2021 with strategies focusing on community engagement, proactive enforcement, and measurable outcomes.
