A Weeping Water man has been sentenced to federal prison for the crime of Felon in Possession of Ammunition. Matthew W. Miller, 36, of Weeping Water, Nebraska, was sentenced to 37 months’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher.
Miller’s sentencing stems from an incident on August 10, 2021, when he pawned Winchester .357 ammunition at Sol’s Pawn Shop in Omaha. Miller’s information was recorded for the sale, and the pawn ticket was submitted for fingerprint analysis, which confirmed his fingerprints were on the ticket. Additionally, Miller was photographed pawning the ammunition.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms confirmed that all the ammunition Miller pawned was manufactured outside the state of Nebraska. This is significant, as it highlights the interstate nature of the crime and demonstrates the need for federal involvement in the case.
Miller has a lengthy criminal history, with multiple felony convictions in several Nebraska counties. His prior felonies include felony Theft offenses committed in Douglas and Washington counties, Burglary (Douglas County), Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person (Douglas County). These convictions demonstrate a pattern of behavior that poses a significant threat to public safety.
The case was investigated by the Omaha Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. These agencies worked together to build a strong case against Miller, ensuring that he was held accountable for his actions. The successful prosecution of this case sends a strong message to those who would seek to circumvent the law and possess firearms or ammunition illegally.
After his release from prison, Miller will begin a 3-year term of supervised release. This will provide an additional layer of oversight and ensure that he does not pose a continued threat to the community. The sentence handed down by Judge Buescher reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need to protect the public from individuals who have demonstrated a willingness to disregard the law.
The sentencing of Matthew W. Miller serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing federal firearms laws and the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies. By working together, these agencies can help to prevent crimes and ensure that those who break the law are held accountable for their actions.
