Russell Glenn Crane, a 44-year-old man from Urbandale, Iowa, has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for a heinous crime that has left a community reeling. Crane pleaded guilty to a charge of Possession of Child Pornography, a crime that has been condemned by law enforcement and the public alike.
According to court documents, Crane knowingly possessed visual depictions of child pornography, including over 20,000 images and at least four videos, some of which depicted minors younger than 12 years old. The sheer scale of the offense is shocking, with Crane having collected the child pornography over the course of at least a decade by downloading the material from various internet sites.
The investigation into Crane’s activities was led by the Urbandale Police Department, Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Essley, who worked tirelessly to bring Crane to justice.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement, highlighting the importance of protecting children from exploitation and abuse. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood was created in 2006 by the Department of Justice, and is led by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. In addition to his prison sentence, Crane must also serve a five-year term of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system, ensuring that Crane will serve the full term of his sentence. The community can take comfort in the knowledge that justice has been served, and that Crane will be held accountable for his heinous crimes.
The sentencing of Russell Glenn Crane serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation and abuse. It also highlights the tireless work of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in bringing perpetrators to justice. As a community, we must continue to work together to prevent such crimes from occurring, and to support those who have been affected by them.
