LAREDO, Texas – A pair of Laredo residents are facing a long stretch behind bars after being convicted of conspiring to flood the streets with nearly 20 kilograms of high-purity methamphetamine sourced from Mexico. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced the sentences today, marking a significant blow to the region’s drug pipeline.
Antonio Ruiz, 37, and Timothy Andrew Hernandez, 24, both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import a controlled substance. Ruiz entered his plea on November 9, 2022, while Hernandez followed suit on December 1, 2022. Their involvement in the scheme was meticulously detailed during the investigation, culminating in today’s harsh sentencing.
U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez didn’t mince words when delivering the sentences. Ruiz was slapped with a 30-year prison term, while Hernandez received a 130-month sentence – over 10 years. Judge Alvarez specifically highlighted Ruiz’s extensive criminal history, dating back to his 18th birthday. She also rebuked him for not guiding Hernandez away from a life of crime, but instead actively involving him in this dangerous operation.
The operation, uncovered on May 7, 2022, involved an undercover agent posing as a driver. Ruiz, believing he had secured transportation, directed the agent to deliver a truck laden with the 19 kilograms of methamphetamine to a predetermined location. Hernandez was tasked with picking up the vehicle. Ruiz acted as a remote controller, guiding Hernandez to the truck and relaying information to the driver. The plan involved transferring the drugs to another vehicle for transport further into the United States. Lab analysis revealed the methamphetamine was a staggering 99% pure.
Following the bust, arrest warrants were issued. Hernandez was taken into custody on July 7, 2022, and Ruiz followed on September 9, 2022. In a bizarre courtroom moment, Ruiz attempted to claim innocence, stating he wasn’t involved in drug use or trafficking. Judge Alvarez swiftly shut down his protest, stating that even a single instance of the crime warrants severe punishment. Both men are now awaiting transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with crucial assistance from Customs and Border Protection, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the United Independent School District Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Homero Ramirez skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the convictions and lengthy sentences that aim to disrupt the flow of methamphetamine into the country. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from poisoning our communities will face the full force of federal law.
