Tovar’s Meth Habit Bites: 200 Months for Corpus Christi Felon

A 36-year-old Corpus Christi resident’s reckless behavior landed him in the slammer for 200 months after being caught with a firearm and a stash of meth.

Adolfo Tovar, 36, was sentenced for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute meth, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.

Tovar pleaded guilty to the charges on December 1, 2022, and U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the 200-month sentence, which will be followed by five years of supervised release.

The court’s decision was influenced by Tovar’s significant and serious criminal history, including previous convictions for attempted robbery and second-degree robbery.

The incident that led to Tovar’s sentencing occurred on the evening of April 10, 2021, when a concerned citizen reported a vehicle parked crookedly in a parking space at a local gas station with a male driver who appeared to be unconscious.

Authorities approached the driver, later identified as Tovar, and asked him to exit the vehicle and provide identification. During this interaction, Tovar pulled out two blue baggies, commonly used to package narcotics, which fell to the ground. Further investigation revealed additional drug paraphernalia inside Tovar’s SUV, including meth, scales, and baggies in the center console, and a firearm under the driver’s seat.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation with assistance from the Corpus Christi Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Dunn prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served for the community.

Tovar has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
