A brazen display of defiance ended in a hail of gunfire for Oxford man Brandon Dearborn, 31, who was sentenced to 20 months in prison for his role in an armed confrontation with police in Mexico, Maine, in August 2022.
According to court records, a 911 caller reported a man brandishing a firearm outside an apartment building in Mexico, which police later identified as Dearborn. Officers instructed him to drop the weapon, a Ruger .22 pistol, but Dearborn instead urged them to shoot him and raised the pistol towards them, prompting the officers to fire and striking him multiple times.
The FBI and Maine State Police investigated the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Dearborn’s arrest was the result of a prior felony drug conviction in the Oxford County Superior Court, which made him a prohibited person from possessing a firearm.
Despite his defiant actions, Dearborn pleaded guilty on January 31, 2024, to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Jon D. Levy handed down the 20-month sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release.
The case highlights the dangers of gun violence and the importance of community-based programs aimed at preventing such incidents. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a key initiative in reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
As part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, the Department of Justice has launched a violent crime reduction strategy, focusing on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
Dearborn’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of prioritizing public safety. The Grimy Times will continue to provide coverage of high-profile cases and the impact of violent crime on our communities.
