A convicted felon with a history of breaking the law has landed himself behind bars once again. Daryl Jay Dickson, a 38-year-old Zuni man, has pleaded guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
In a move that should send a chill down the spines of law-abiding citizens, Dickson admitted in his plea agreement that as a previously convicted felon, he knew he was not allowed to possess a firearm and ammunition.
The handgun he possessed will be forfeited to the United States government, a stark reminder that those who break the law will be held accountable.
The Court ordered that Dickson remain on conditions of release pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled. At sentencing, Dickson faces between 27 and 33 months in prison, a sentence that should serve as a deterrent to those who would consider following in his footsteps.
Upon his release from prison, Dickson will be subject to up to three years of supervised release, a close eye will be kept on him to ensure he doesn’t continue to break the law.
The investigation into Dickson’s firearm possession was a collaborative effort between the Zuni Police Department, Zuni Fish and Wildlife, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones is prosecuting the case, a reminder that law enforcement agencies are working together to keep our communities safe.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez made the announcement today, a message to the people of New Mexico that those who break the law will be brought to justice.
