Goshen Man Sentenced for Gun Possession After Mental Evaluation
In a harsh blow to the community, Koby Eldridge, 31, of Goshen, Indiana, was sentenced to 84 months in prison for possessing a firearm after being adjudicated mentally defective.
According to court documents, on May 2023, Eldridge was found in possession of five loaded firearms in his car, and another loaded firearm and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition were recovered from his residence. This is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence in our communities.
Eldridge had previously been adjudicated incompetent to stand trial in Elkhart Superior Court in February 2021 and was committed to a mental institution, rendering him incapable of possessing firearms. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Goshen Police Department, Elkhart Police Department, and Elkhart Sheriff’s Department, led the investigation into this case.
Assistant United States Attorney Joel Gabrielse prosecuted the case, which is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative. This program aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
The PSN initiative was launched in May 2021, with the goal of making our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The harsh sentence handed down to Eldridge serves as a warning to those who would disregard the law and put their communities at risk.
This case highlights the importance of community cooperation and the need for law enforcement to work together to tackle the complex issue of gun violence. As we continue to work towards a safer tomorrow, we must remain vigilant and hold accountable those who would seek to harm others.
The Department of Justice is committed to keeping our communities safe, and this sentence is a testament to that commitment. We urge everyone to be aware of the dangers of gun violence and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
