PITTSBURGH, Pa – In a shocking case of prescription meds abuse, a Pittsburgh nurse has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role in a prescription meds scam.
Kevin N. Ukaegbu, 31, a former graduate nurse at Allegheny General Hospital, was found guilty of computer fraud after he used the hospital credentials of a Highmark resident physician to modify prescription medications for two patients.
The investigation, led by the Homeland Security Investigations of the United States Department of Homeland Security with the assistance of Highmark Health Police, revealed that on December 5, 2022, Ukaegbu attempted to modify prescription medications for two patients, putting one of them at risk of serious bodily harm.
Due to the seriousness of the crime, United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the maximum sentence under the guideline range.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan commended the investigators for their hard work and dedication in bringing Ukaegbu to justice.
Ukaegbu’s sentence will serve as a warning to those who would seek to exploit their position for personal gain.
The case highlights the need for vigilance in the medical community and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to prevent such crimes.
