Hot Springs Woman Sentenced to 235 Months for Methamphetamine Trafficking
A Hot Springs woman was sentenced to 235 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release on one count of Distribution of More Than 50 Grams of Actual Methamphetamine. The Honorable Judge Susan O. Hickey presided over the sentencing hearing in the United States District Court in Hot Springs.
The defendant, Melissa Kay Lane, 46, was caught in a sting operation conducted by Special Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in April and May of 2021. The agents conducted two separate controlled purchases of methamphetamine from Lane, resulting in the seizure of 219.13 grams, or approximately 8 ounces, of pure methamphetamine.
The investigation revealed that Lane was in possession of over seven kilograms, or approximately 15.5 pounds, of methamphetamine at her residence when she was arrested in September 2021 on outstanding drug warrants issued by the State of Texas.
Lane’s arrest was the culmination of a months-long investigation by the DEA, the Hot Springs Police Department, and the 18th East Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which targets high-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Achorn prosecuted the case, which was led by U.S. Attorney David Clay Fowlkes of the Western District of Arkansas. The effort to dismantle Lane’s operation is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in the Western District of Arkansas.
The seizure of over seven kilograms of methamphetamine is the largest quantity ever seized in the Western District of Arkansas, according to court documents. Lane’s sentencing is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies to combating the methamphetamine epidemic in the region.
