Troy felon Jashene Austin, 29, of Troy, New York, has just landed himself in a world of trouble after pleading guilty to selling 50 grams of fentanyl and a semi-automatic pistol in a deal gone wrong.
Austin’s crimes are straight out of a nightmare – fentanyl is a deadly opioid addiction fuel that’s killing Americans at an alarming rate. And possessing a firearm as a convicted felon is a serious offense in New York, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
According to sources, Austin made the ill-fated sale on August 11, 2023, to an unknown buyer. His prior felony conviction for attempted burglary has barred him from owning a firearm in the Empire State.
Carla B. Freedman, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, and Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the ATF, were quick to condemn Austin’s actions.
The punishment for Austin’s crimes could be severe – up to 40 years in prison, a fine of up to $5 million, and at least 4 years of supervised release after serving his time. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on October 22, 2024, by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino.
The investigation into Austin’s crimes was carried out by the ATF with assistance from the Troy Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emmet O’Hanlon is prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime in America.
