MEMPHIS, TN – A federal grand jury in Tennessee has indicted four Memphis men on conspiracy and bank robbery charges for a string of heists that shook the city in 2023. Robert Haley, 44, Devin Hinds, 34, Courtney Trenell, 32, and Monterrio Trenell, 28, have been charged with committing six bank robberies across the Memphis area.
The accused are alleged to have robbed First Horizon Bank on N. Watkins Street on April 27, Truist Bank on Poplar Avenue on August 11, and another First Horizon Bank at N. Germantown Parkway on October 20. The spree continued with the October 20 theft from Bank of Bartlett at Trinity Road, another First Horizon Bank at N. Watkins Street on October 25, and finally, Independent Bank on Union Avenue on December 22.
United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating that ‘Our office will continue to work with law enforcement partners to double down on fighting violent crime.’ Special Agent in Charge Douglas S. DePodesta of the FBI Memphis Field Office echoed this sentiment, commending collaborative efforts between all levels of law enforcement.
Hinds and Haley face life sentences if convicted on all counts, while Courtney Trenell and Monterrio Trenell are looking at five years in prison. All defendants could also be fined up to $250,000. The case is under the jurisdiction of Senior United States District Judge Jon P. McCalla.
This investigation was a joint effort between the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force and the Memphis Police Department. Additional information can be provided to CrimeStoppers at 901-528-2274.
The charges against the defendants are accusations, not evidence, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Assistant United States Attorney Greg Wagner and Department of Justice Trial Attorney Aaron Henricks with the Violent Crime Initiative are prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
