Everett A. Simpson, Kidnapping, New Hampshire 2024

Burlington, Vermont – A sinister chapter in the annals of New Hampshire’s criminal history closed on June 17, 2024, as Everett A. Simpson, 46, from St. Johnsbury, was sentenced by United States District Judge William K. Sessions III to 300 months’ imprisonment, followed by a 5-year supervised release.

Simpson was convicted by a jury on April 18, 2023, of two counts of kidnapping and two counts of interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle after a harrowing trial that spanned six days.

The horror began on January 4, 2019, when Simpson absconded from the Valley Vista treatment facility in Bradford, Vermont. The following morning, he stole a commercial van and crossed into New Hampshire, where he abducted a young woman and her four-year-old child at gunpoint. Simpson’s violent spree led him to Vermont, where his intent to locate his estranged wife turned into a harrowing ordeal that included sexual assault.

United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest emphasized the severity of Simpson’s crimes, saying, “The defendant’s actions were both violent and random, casting a shadow over two innocent lives.” Kerest commended the collaborative efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies in apprehending Simpson.

The trial saw Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew Lasher and Paul Van de Graaf represent the government, while Simpson chose to represent himself, with Steven Barth acting as standby counsel. After a relentless pursuit across state lines, Simpson was finally brought to justice, marking a significant victory for law enforcement and victims alike.
