CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The cyber world trembled as a Charlotte man was found guilty of pulling off a massive cyber extortion shakedown against a D.C.-based tech giant. Cameron Curry, 27, hit the jackpot with his scheme, demanding $2.5 million in cryptocurrency to keep the secrets of his former employer under wraps. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson announced the verdict after a trial that had everyone’s eyes on the digital heist.

Curry, who was hired as a data analyst for the firm, turned traitor when the ax fell on his contract renewal. According to the evidence, from December 11, 2023, until January 24, 2024, Curry, operating online as ‘Loot,’ bombarded company employees with over 60 emails, each containing threats to spill sensitive data if he didn’t get his hands on $2.5 million. The feds moved fast, swooping down on Curry’s pad and grabbing all the digital evidence they needed.
