Burke Sentenced for Chicago City Council Corruption

Chicago’s reputation as a city of corrupt politics was once again under the spotlight today as Edward M. Burke, former alderman of the 14th Ward, faced the music for his role in the city’s pervasive corruption.

Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, minced no words, stating, ‘Corruption in the Chicago City Council tears at the fabric of local government.’Pasqual emphasized that Burke’s failure to uphold honesty and integrity betrayed not only the citizens of Chicago but also his fellow public officials who genuinely serve the public.

‘Our office will continue to vigorously prosecute corruption and hold public officials accountable for violating the public trust,’ Pasqual vowed, underscoring a commitment to justice amidst the city’s dark history of political malfeasance.

Robert W. ‘Wes’ Wheeler, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI Chicago Field Office, echoed the sentiment of justice served. ‘Aldermen are elected to advocate for the public good,’ Wheeler reminded readers. ‘Bribery and extortion are contrary to that mission, and today’s sentencing highlights the consequences of betraying the public trust for personal gain.’
