Colorado Springs, Colo. – A monstrous fraud scheme at Return to Nature Funeral Home has led to a grim sentencing for its operator, Jon M. Hallford. The 45-year-old was today sentenced to 240 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $1,070,413.74 in restitution for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Hallford, who ran the funeral home with his wife, Carie, mishandled at least 190 bodies over four years, collecting over $130,000 from grief-stricken families for services never rendered. Bodies were found decomposing inside the facility, while Hallford submitted falsified death certificates and provided families with dry concrete mix instead of cremated remains.
Jon and Carie Hallford also conspired to defraud the Small Business Administration (SBA) by obtaining $882,300 in COVID-19 relief funds. The scheme was a grotesque exploitation of grieving families and a betrayal of public trust, said United States Attorney Peter McNeilly.
FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek condemned Hallford’s actions as despicable, noting the defendant had no regard for dignity or respect due to deceased loved ones. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s Rebecca Spiess praised collaboration that brought justice to the deceived families and served as a reminder of their commitment to protecting citizens.
Jonathan Huang of the SBA Office of Inspector General emphasized the dedication to ensuring justice in such predatory behavior, highlighting the OIG’s role in protecting small business support programs. The sentencing marks a severe penalty for Hallford’s callous and disturbing actions.
