TYLER, Texas – The grimy streets of Athens have witnessed the fall of a meth kingpin. James Kiser, 40, has been handed a 70-month federal prison sentence for his relentless methamphetamine trafficking operations in the Eastern District of Texas, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
On July 10, 2025, the sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker after Kiser pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The Athens native’s drug dealing spree came to an end on October 19, 2023, when he was caught selling a staggering 34 grams of the deadly substance for $500 cash.
But Kiser’s criminal history is far from a one-off. Court records reveal a monstrous tally of 27 prior convictions spanning Henderson and Smith counties. His latest conviction sends a chilling message to those who peddle poison on the streets of Texas.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) played a pivotal role in this case, leading the investigation that ultimately led to Kiser’s downfall. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble was the architect behind the prosecution, ensuring justice was served for the community.
As the DEA and other law enforcement agencies continue their relentless pursuit of drug traffickers, they stand as a beacon of hope for those who seek a meth-free Texas. With Kiser’s sentence, it’s clear that the fight against illegal drugs is far from over.
This case serves as a stark reminder that no matter how long or how violent the crime, justice will be served in the end. The grimy streets of Athens may have seen Kiser’s reign of terror come to an end, but for Texas, the war on drugs continues.
