Scott pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Scott was the ringleader of a conspiracy that deposited approximately $192,000 and successfully withdrew $13,325 in fraudulent and stolen checks at financial institutions in the Northern District of Indiana and elsewhere. Scott recruited others into the conspiracy and provided them with checks and false identifications, allowing them to open accounts and deposit checks under false pretenses.

The conspiracy took place between June 2023 and July 2023, and Scott’s actions resulted in significant financial losses for the victims. In addition to his 46-month prison sentence, Scott was also ordered to pay $13,325 in restitution to the victims of the offense. He will also serve 24 months of supervised release following his prison term.

The case was investigated by a team of law enforcement agencies, including the United States Treasury Department – Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Griffith Police Department. The United States Marshals Service also provided support for the investigation.

The prosecution of Damone J. Scott was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Francis Sohn. The case was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, which aims to identify, disrupt, and dismantle high-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations.

The OCDETF program uses a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach to leverage the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks. By working together, law enforcement agencies can share resources and expertise to more effectively combat complex and sophisticated crimes like the conspiracy led by Damone J. Scott.

In a statement, Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentencing of Damone J. Scott, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for their role in complex financial crimes. The sentencing of Scott serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are committed to protecting the public and preventing further victimization by combating financial crimes and conspiracy.
