DAVENPORT, Iowa – In a dramatic turn of events surrounding an officer involved shooting in Muscatine, two hardened criminals, Juan Aldo Beltran Delgado and Isidro Barajas Jr., have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a drug trafficking operation. The sentencing took place on July 22, 2025.
Beltran Delgado, 34, and Barajas, Jr., 30, were arrested following an intense pursuit that began when they attempted to evade law enforcement after picking up a package containing over 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine. Their spree of law-breaking culminated in a high-speed chase that ended with Beltran Delgado crashing into two vehicles near Highway 61 and Cedar Street.
After the crash, both suspects fled on foot armed with firearms. They opened fire at officers before being apprehended. The charges against them were severe: conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, carrying and discharging a firearm during the drug trafficking, and being felons in possession of firearms. Beltran Delgado received a 35-year federal prison sentence, while Barajas was sentenced to 32 years behind bars.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal announced the sentences, noting that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Public Safety, and multiple local law enforcement agencies were instrumental in the investigation.
Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched on May 26, 2021, with a focus on fostering community trust, supporting preventive initiatives, and strategically enforcing laws to enhance public safety. For more information on PSN, please visit Justice.gov/PSN.
