BANGOR, Maine — In a gritty courtroom drama, 27-year-old Oscarlin Peguero Ortiz from New York has pleaded guilty to serious drug trafficking charges in Franklin County. Ortiz stands accused of distributing deadly substances, including heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine base.
The investigation kicked off when the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office got wind of illegal drug activity at an Avon residence. In July 2020, authorities moved in with a search warrant, leading them to Oscarlin Peguero Ortiz inside the residence. The operation was a veritable treasure trove for law enforcement as they uncovered approximately 85 grams of a heroin-fentanyl mix and 40 grams of crack cocaine.
But that wasn’t all. Ortiz’s stash also included digital scales, drug paraphernalia, and an estimated $8,000 in cash, all pointing to a substantial operation. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office had hit the motherlode.
Peguero Ortiz now faces a potential 20 years behind bars, alongside a fine that could soar up to $1 million. He’ll also serve at least three years of supervised release with life on the line if he fails to comply. His fate will be sealed following a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office and after a federal district court judge mulls over the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other critical factors.
This case has been a collaborative effort between the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Maine State Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The community’s safety is their top priority, and today’s plea marks another step in dismantling drug rings that threaten local neighborhoods.
