SIOUX CITY, IA – Richard Martinez, 30, of Sioux City, Iowa, is facing a substantial prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal methamphetamine charges on July 24, 2025. The plea stems from a July 17, 2024, incident involving a high-speed chase and the disposal of narcotics near WinnaVegas Casino, just outside Sloan, Iowa.
According to court documents, law enforcement officers conducting surveillance at the casino observed a vehicle speeding away from the premises. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle took off, initiating a pursuit. During the chase, two packages containing approximately ½ pound of methamphetamine were hurled from the passenger window. The discarded drugs were quickly recovered by authorities.
Martinez admitted in court that the driver of the vehicle handed him the methamphetamine and explicitly instructed him to throw it out during the pursuit – an order he readily obeyed. This admission of aiding and abetting in the possession with intent to distribute sealed his fate. The details paint a clear picture of a desperate attempt to evade justice and destroy evidence.
The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a multi-agency coalition comprising the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sioux City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, South Sioux City Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Iowa National Guard, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, United States Marshals Service, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office, along with crucial support from the DEA Laboratory. Their coordinated work brought Martinez to justice.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand will determine Martinez’s sentence following the completion of a presentence report. Martinez remains in federal custody pending that sentencing. He faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison and could receive up to 40 years behind bars, along with a hefty $5,000,000 fine and a supervised release period ranging from four years to life after his imprisonment.
Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde is prosecuting the case. Those seeking further information can access court file 24-4078 at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Updates on this and other federal cases in the Northern District of Iowa can be found on X @USAO_NDIA.
