Rapid City Meth Kingpin Gets 17+ Years

RAPID CITY, SD – Andre Gibson, 46, of Rapid City, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 17 years and six months in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution ring. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on July 25, 2025, following Gibson’s guilty plea earlier this year.

The case, brought by United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, detailed how Gibson conspired with out-of-state associates to flood the Rapid City area with the deadly drug. A federal grand jury indicted Gibson in May 2024, alleging he received multiple packages of methamphetamine via the United States Mail Service. Gibson admitted to distributing between 1.5 and 5 kilograms – roughly 3 to 11 pounds – of the drug.

“This wasn’t a small-time operation,” a source close to the investigation told Grimy Times. “Gibson was a key link in a network moving significant quantities of meth into Rapid City. He profited from addiction and the misery it causes.” The investigation revealed a sophisticated operation designed to evade law enforcement, utilizing the mail system to transport the narcotics.

U.S. Attorney Ramsdell emphasized the growing trend of criminals exploiting the postal service for drug trafficking. “More and more often, criminals are shipping narcotics through the U.S. mail system,” she stated. “Fortunately, our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners are highly skilled at intercepting these packages and tracking down suspects, thereby allowing the U.S. Attorney’s Office to secure federal convictions and pursue significant prison sentences, just as we did against Andre Gibson.”

The successful prosecution was a collaborative effort, involving the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward C. Tarbay led the charge, securing the conviction and substantial sentence. Gibson will also serve five years of supervised release after his prison term and is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Following the sentencing, Gibson was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from the distribution of dangerous drugs will be held accountable at the federal level, facing severe penalties for their crimes. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
