Mobile Shopping Fraud Ring Busted in $1M Scheme

Eight alleged members of a massive mobile shopping service fraud ring have been indicted in a sprawling conspiracy that siphoned over $1 million from unsuspecting consumers.

The suspects, hailing from California, Michigan, Ohio, and Oregon, are charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and eight counts each of wire fraud and aiding and abetting. The ring is alleged to have targeted two mobile shopping service companies based in San Francisco and Birmingham.

According to the indictment, the scheme involved a phishing attack on active and inactive shopper accounts. Once control was gained, the suspects placed fictitious orders through the apps, using the funds loaded onto digital debit cards to purchase gift cards. These gift cards were then used to buy cryptocurrency or fulfill personal online orders.

Today, arrests were made across the country: Yusuf Mohamed Ali and Mazen Hassan Mohamed in Columbus, Ohio; Abubakar Mohamed Ali in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Abdulkadir Mohamed Ali in Portland, Oregon; and Ahmed Mohamed Ali, Abdirahman Abdalla Mahamed, Hussein Mohamed Ali, Omar Mohamed Ali in Detroit, Michigan. All suspects appeared in federal district court today.

U.S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian, FBI Special Agent in Charge Sanjay Virmani, and U.S. Secret Service (USSS) Special Agent in Charge Shawn Bradstreet announced the arrests. The defendants are currently free on bond and are scheduled to appear in federal district court in Oakland on August 25th.

Each defendant faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 per count. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kenneth Chambers and Evan Mateer are prosecuting the case, which is the result of an FBI and USSS investigation.
