Effingham Man Pleads Guilty to Elder Fraud, Stealing Over $330K

BENTON, Ill. – A chilling case of elder exploitation has reached a court room as Edward L. Stief, Jr., 42, from Effingham County, appeared in federal court to plea guilty to wire fraud, mail fraud, and unlawful monetary transactions. The total amount of money exploited was a staggering $338,773.

Stief’s scheme began with posing as a trusted helper offering lawn care services, which he used to gain the confidence of his elderly victim. He then deceived the vulnerable senior into appointing him as Financial and Healthcare Power of Attorney. His sentencing hearing is set for December 2nd at the federal courthouse in Benton.

According to U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft, ‘The defendant exploited trust, leading to false promises of care to extract more money.’ FBI Springfield Special Agent in Charge Christopher J.S. Johnson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the FBI’s commitment to hold such predators accountable for their callous actions.

Stief took control of his victim’s financials, cashing out life insurance policies and transferring funds into his personal accounts. He also stole valuable items including gold coins, necklaces, and watches. His neglectful care even led the victim to leave a nursing home facility under false pretenses.

Convictions for wire and mail fraud carry potential sentences of up to 20 years, while unlawful monetary transactions could result in up to 10 years in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Howard is prosecuting the case with assistance from the FBI Springfield Field Office and the Effingham Police Department.

The National Elder Fraud Hotline (833-372-8311) offers a lifeline for those over 60, providing resources and support to report crimes. Callers can remain anonymous, and translation services are available.
