SCRANTON, PA – Sheldon Mays, 25, of New Jersey, is facing serious federal charges after authorities discovered he was allegedly packing heat inside Schuylkill Federal Correctional Facility. An indictment handed down yesterday by a federal grand jury accuses Mays of possession of a prohibited weapon while already serving time.
According to Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, the alleged incident occurred on July 27, 2024. The indictment details that Mays possessed a makeshift weapon: a sharpened piece of plastic, crudely fashioned with a cloth handle. The specifics of how the weapon was made – and who it was intended for – remain under investigation, but the presence of any weapon within prison walls is a major security breach.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (“FBI”) led the investigation, a clear indication the feds are taking this seriously. Sources within the Bureau suggest this wasn’t a simple shiv found during a routine cell search. The level of craftsmanship, however basic, points to premeditation. Was this intended for intimidation? A planned assault? The FBI isn’t saying, but they’re digging.
Assistant United States Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is building the case against Mays. If convicted, he’s looking at a maximum sentence of 5 years behind bars – on top of the time he’s already serving. He’ll also face a term of supervised release after serving his additional sentence, and a hefty fine. But remember, an indictment is just an accusation.
Mays is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The federal sentencing guidelines are complex, and the judge will ultimately determine the appropriate punishment based on those guidelines and the specific details of the case. However, adding a weapons charge to an existing sentence rarely leads to leniency.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds. The question remains: how did Mays manage to smuggle a weapon into a federal correctional facility? And who, if anyone, helped him? We’ll be watching to see if this indictment leads to further charges and exposes any systemic security failures at Schuylkill FCI.
