U.P. Dad Gets Life for Baby Carter’s Brutal Murder

MARQUETTE, MI – Eugene Walter-George Rantanen, 37, of L’Anse, Michigan, will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the savage killing of his 19-month-old son, Carter. U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey announced the sentence today, a consequence deemed necessary given the “horrendous treatment” inflicted upon the defenseless toddler. The case lays bare a chilling example of abuse and a justice system finally responding with the full weight of the law.

The nightmare unfolded on February 19, 2024, when Rantanen dialed 911, claiming his son was unresponsive. Carter was rushed to three different hospitals, but the damage was already done. Medical professionals testified that the child suffered from extensive abusive assault, and the medical examiner definitively ruled the cause of death as blunt-force trauma – a homicide. The prosecution successfully argued that Rantanen, as the sole caretaker at the time, was the only one capable of inflicting such devastating injuries.

Evidence revealed a disturbing backstory. Carter’s birth mother had made arrangements for him to be adopted into a loving home, but Rantanen fought to retain custody. According to U.S. Attorney VerHey, “all evidence suggests that, instead of loving and doting on and caring for Carter, Rantanen subjected him to months of abuse and neglect.” The jury clearly saw through the defendant’s lies, convicting him on both counts of murder and first-degree child abuse.

“This toddler’s life was tragic,” VerHey stated. “Although this sentence will not bring this little boy back, we hope it provides some measure of justice and comfort to those who loved Carter, including his birth mother, adoptive parents, and family.” The case highlights the particularly heartbreaking vulnerability of children in abusive situations and the tireless work required to hold perpetrators accountable.

FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben Coleman emphasized the severity of Rantanen’s actions. “The conviction of Eugene Rantanen further ensures the public that this child predator and murderer will never again have the opportunity to harm another innocent young soul.” The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the FBI Marquette Resident Agency, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Police, Village L’Anse Police, Baraga County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

This case is particularly poignant as it falls under the Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts to address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP). The Bureau of Indian Affairs notes that Native American and Alaska Native communities have faced decades of disproportionately high rates of violence. Sanford, Jeanne F. Long, and Theodore J. Greeley.
