ROANOKE, VA – Lenny Baldwin Jr., 30, a convicted sex offender already under federal supervision, has now admitted to a brazen attempt to obstruct justice. Baldwin pled guilty yesterday to one count of witness tampering, stemming from a pattern of illicit text messaging and direct requests to a minor to cover up his crimes. He now faces up to 20 years behind bars.
The case unfolded after Baldwin’s release from federal prison on May 10, 2023, and the start of his supervised release. While employed at a local Dollar Tree, Baldwin befriended a 16-year-old boy, identified in court documents as MV1. This seemingly innocuous encounter quickly spiraled into a series of inappropriate interactions, culminating in sexually charged text messages sent via iPhone beginning in October 2023.
Baldwin didn’t just send the messages; he actively worked to conceal them. Court records detail how he utilized the iPhone’s “unsend” feature to erase three messages, desperately trying to avoid detection by his probation officer. The following day, he escalated his efforts, texting MV1 and explicitly requesting the deletion of their entire conversation, warning the teen he didn’t want “the wrong eyes” to see the content. This wasn’t a one-time plea; Baldwin repeatedly asked MV1 to delete the messages across multiple phone numbers.
The deception continued into November and December. Baldwin acquired a new phone and number, failing to notify his probation officer as required, and resumed sending sexually suggestive texts to MV1. Each time, the pattern repeated: inappropriate messages followed by demands for deletion, all in a calculated effort to evade accountability for violating the terms of his supervised release. Baldwin’s actions weren’t simply a lapse in judgment; they were a deliberate attempt to manipulate a minor and obstruct a federal investigation.
Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, Robert N. Tracci, announced the guilty plea, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense. The investigation was a joint effort between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement- Homeland Security Investigations and the City of Roanoke Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Scheff is handling the prosecution, and will determine sentencing after considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Baldwin’s sentencing date has not yet been announced, but a significant prison term is widely anticipated given his history and the nature of his crimes.
This case serves as a stark reminder that even those on supervised release are not beyond the reach of the law. Baldwin’s attempt to prey on a minor and then cover his tracks has landed him back in federal court, facing potentially decades in prison. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
