Demarcus Williams, Gun Possession, Tennessee 2024

MEMPHIS, TN – A federal jury in Tennessee has delivered a severe blow to the streets of Memphis by convicting Demarcus Williams, 33, of the grim crime of illegally possessing a firearm. The verdict comes after a three-day trial that saw Williams, a repeat violent offender, face the full brunt of the justice system.

Williams was found guilty of one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and the jury made a special finding that he had been previously convicted of three separate violent felonies. This conviction mandates a minimum sentence of fifteen years in federal prison for Williams, who has now been branded an armed career criminal (ACC).

The grim discovery was made on July 26, 2023, when an officer with the Memphis Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop. Under the driver’s seat where Williams was occupying, they found a loaded Taurus .40 caliber pistol. United States Attorney D. Michael Dunavant called such behavior “an inherent danger to the community” and vowed to aggressively enforce federal law.

Dunavant also highlighted the importance of programs like Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust in communities, supporting local organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results. This case is a testament to the program’s effectiveness in making neighborhoods safer for everyone.

The sentencing is scheduled for January 29, 2026, before United States District Judge Mark S. Norris. Assistant United States Attorneys Lynn Crum and Jermal Blanchard handled the prosecution, with gratitude extended to all law enforcement partners involved in the investigation.
