Felony Fugitive Sentenced to 15 Years for Gun Possession
ROCHESTER, NY – Davon Washington, a 30-year-old Rochester resident with a history of violent crimes, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for possessing an illegal firearm.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., announced the sentencing of Washington, who was found to be an Armed Career Offender under federal law. Judge David G. Larimer also ordered Washington to serve five years of post-release supervision.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas E. Gregory, who handled the case, Washington was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation on Jewel Street in Rochester. The defendant attempted to flee from the vehicle and engaged in a physical struggle with police officers.
During the struggle, Washington was observed tossing a handgun over a fence, which was later recovered in an adjacent yard. Officers found the defendant hiding in a nearby apartment building.
The sentencing marks the culmination of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and Explosives, under the direction of Resident Agent in Charge Scott Heagney, along with officers and investigators with the Rochester Police Department, under the direction of Chief James Sheppard.
The case highlights the dangers posed by individuals with a history of violent crimes who continue to engage in illicit activities. The sentencing should serve as a warning to those who think they can continue to break the law without consequence.
As a result of the sentencing, the community is safer, and law enforcement can continue to work towards reducing crime and keeping the public safe.
